Marcia Boraas, M.D. is an associate professor in the department of surgical oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, and a senior member of the Fox Chase Breast Cancer team. She is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and subsequently completed her residency in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, including an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellowship.
Since the 1980s she has had an active surgical practice in Philadelphia, where she was one of the first surgeons in the area to promote breast conservation as an alternative to mastectomy and to concentrate specifically on the care of women with breast disease. During her career, Dr. Boraas has held continuous academic and surgical staff appointments at either Fox Chase Cancer Center or the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, working in a multidisciplinary practice model with other breast cancer experts. This clinical setting has allowed her to offer patients progressive, comprehensive surgical care and access to practice-changing clinical trials.
Although Dr. Boraas is a listed author on multiple published papers and book chapters, her professional focus is working directly with patients and families who are dealing with the fear and anxiety of an anticipated or actual breast cancer diagnosis. As a result, Dr. Boraas is the recipient of two awards from the Komen Foundation: the Tickled Pink Teens for the Cure award in 2009 and a Light of Life award in 2014, shared with the Fox Chase breast team.
After many years as a designated “Top Doc,” both locally by Philadelphia Magazine and nationally by U.S. News and World Report, Dr. Boraas is currently limiting her practice to second opinion consultations, while still working closely with the breast cancer team at Fox Chase. She has accumulated a wealth of experience in managing both benign and malignant breast disease and is excited by the opportunity to share that experience as a member of the Breastcancer.org Professional Advisory Board.
